At the same time, it can be daunting and make you feel vulnerable. You need to learn a lot fast, build new relationships, and establish yourself as a professional in a new environment.

That’s why Heriot Brown In-House Legal Recruitment are offering a free Career Transition Coaching Programme for every lawyer we successfully place in a new role and offer ongoing career development support.

To run this programme, we partner with Career and Leadership Coach, Tami McGonigal of Rinzen Project who will help you strategically navigate through the challenges of moving into a new working environment, support you from day one.

Tami has been incredibly helpful, both professionally and personally. When I first met Tami I had already had some career coaching – something which I explored before speaking to Herriot Brown as I wasn’t sure what my next career move should be. While I felt prepared for my role as a result of this previous coaching, I quickly noticed upon speaking to Tami that subconsciously, I still had so many questions on important issues such as setting boundaries; prioritising my family without sacrificing my career goals and how to make an impact in a male dominated industry. What impressed me the most is that I quickly recognised issues that were daunting me, but when speaking to Tami from the offset, I didn’t feel overwhelmed. She helped me organise my thoughts strategically and answer my own questions and importantly, got me excited about overcoming these obstacles. I feel less intimated of my future and have a better understanding of what I would like to happen over the next 5 years.

Tami is a kind, forgiving (especially when late!) and patient person which makes speaking to her feel effortless. She has a wonderful spirit and outlook of life and it’s impossible not to enjoy catching up.

I think the idea of collaborating career coaching services with new roles is a brilliant idea and even something you might want to offer prospective candidates as often, we end up in the same rat race applying for the same roles which don’t make us happy and some perspective could help. I definitely want to continue meeting with Tami going forward.

I think the sessions were really helpful. Firstly, the initial session ahead of commencing the new role was good to get me to start thinking about what to expect with what seems like such a big change from private practice to in-house. After nearly 10 years in private practice, a switch to in-house seemed like a bit of a leap in the dark and talking through my expectations and discussing how to approach those initial weeks and months was helpful and settled any nerves ahead of starting. You really helped me focus my thoughts going into the role and this encouraged me to be present in my day-to-day decision making process in order to ensure that I made the transition as best as I could. With the sessions that we had after I had started the new role, it was great to have you as a sounding board whilst also being challenged by you to consider how best I could respond to any areas of concern that I may have had and approach them from angles I may not have thought of.

In terms of the results, I think the sessions provided me with some confidence in making the transition in-house. If I did come across any potential areas that were difficult or challenging I thought back to our sessions and that offered me a platform from which to address those areas. I think going into the new role there was always a sense that I may get overwhelmed with the change, however, I think the fact that I didn’t (or haven’t yet!) is testament to our sessions.

In terms of working with you, I thought it was a great offer from HB to have these sessions and I was very keen to say yes when offered. In particular, your ability to pick up on someone else’s strengths and remind them of how important and useful those strengths are, is to be commended. It is very easy for a person to focus on areas they need to improve on and not be so aware of their strengths. However, you often reminded me of my strengths and encouraged me to use that in my thought processes. This was a good source to draw on, and still is, in my early days of being in-house.
